Within a seawater desalination plant, various chemical products are used to ensure the required drinking water quality. To prevent scaling or bio-fouling of reverse osmosis membranes, appropriate CIP [Cleaning in Place] units, with basic and acidic cleaning products, are necessary.

Biological pollution, better known as bio-fouling, is most common in reverse osmosis. This is because the membranes cannot be disinfected with chlorine to kill the bacteria. The permeate produced by the reverse osmosis plant has to be post-treated for subsequent use as drinking water. Piping systems are used in order to meter minerals for the purpose of water hardening and to introduce chlorine as a protective disinfectant.

Scaling is understood to be the accumulation of crystalline deposits on the membrane, necessitating frequent cleaning and, ultimately, leading to a shorter service life of the membrane. Highly concentrated sulphuric acid - which calls for the use of PVDF pipes and fittings - can be used to decrease the pH value during intake and reduce calcium carbonate, which has a low level of solubility. Additionally, so-called anti-scaling products can be used to reduce the effect of scaling.
