SBTI validates SIMONA CO2 reduction targets

Kirn, 6 February 2025. SIMONA signed up to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) at the beginning of 2024. The rationale behind this move is to ensure an effective reduction in the company's carbon footprint, while also making a positive contribution to global climate change mitigation. In joining the SBTi, SIMONA has taken responsibility for the environment and set itself goals that are both quantifiable and based on scientific principles.
A further milestone has now been reached as part of the company's collaborative efforts with the SBTi. The SBTi has provided official confirmation that the science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions submitted by the SIMONA Group fulfil the SBTi's criteria and recommendations. In this context, SIMONA is committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42.0% in absolute terms by 2030 compared to the base year 2022. In addition, SIMONA has pledged to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased goods and services by 51.6% per ton of manufactured product over the same period.
The latest findings of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlight the pressing need for action when it comes to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Despite the IPCC's climate report warning of "code red for humanity", it is still possible to achieve this target. The SBTi has categorized the SIMOMA Group's Scope 1 and Scope 2 reduction targets as ambitious and sees them as being consistent with the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.
"The SBTi's confirmation of our climate targets is a significant achievement in the context of our sustainability strategy. It illustrates that we are on the right track when it comes to making a genuine contribution to global climate change mitigation. Working closely with our partners and customers, we are doing everything in our power to achieve our goals in a determined and effective manner," says Johannes Kappler, Head of Sustainability at SIMONA.
"This milestone highlights our commitment to sustainable corporate governance and our responsibility towards future generations. This latest acknowledgement from the SBTi offers further incentive for us to continue working ambitiously towards realising our climate targets," adds Matthias Schönberg, CEO of the SIMONA Group.
SIMONA has drawn up specific measures for the purpose of scaling back CO2 emissions. As regards the reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the focus is on the use of green electricity and the introduction of process improvements in production. SIMONA aims to achieve its goal of reducing Scope 3 emissions by deploying sustainable materials in collaboration with raw material suppliers and pressing ahead with its EcoPlastIQ range of products made from recycled, biocircular and bio-based raw materials, in addition to pursuing initiatives aimed at integrating production and customer waste into the company's own manufacturing cycle wherever possible.
The SBTi is a collaboration between the global not-for-profit environmental organisation Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Widelife Fund for Nature (WWF). It was established in 2015 for the purpose of supporting companies in defining emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science and the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the aim being to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The initiative calls on companies to set science-based climate targets. It defines best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
